Gregoire will jet to Denmark for UN climate change conference

496px-Governor_Gregoire_Obama_sign_crop The Olympian Politics Blog reported Monday that Washington state governor Christine Gregoire will join President Obama and the choir of Chicken Littles later this month in Copenhagen for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change. On the agenda will be a robust discussion of how national governments and non-governmental organizations can join a global cause to stop either a) the cataclysmic warming or b) the calamitous cooling of the Earth. Don’t worry about choosing the right catastrophe to cheer for –hire a group of scientists to tweak the data to support the apocalyptic Horseman that suits your paranoid nihilistic fancy.

Gregoire’s plans were confirmed today by her spokesman, Glenn Kuper. When asked about the sense of traveling when the state coffers are filled with naught but promises and wishes, Kuper said that the trip was being paid for by a third party. The mysterious benefactor was later identified as the Georgetown Climate Center of Georgetown Law School. Perhaps Gregoire has decided to begin observing the laws of the state, a discipline she hasn’t felt a strong urge to strengthen as I previously wrote.

The journey also serves a very useful political purpose for Gregoire. The Copenhagen trip will come on the heels of the unveiling of the state budget and on her return are the softest two weeks in news coverage – those surrounding Christmas and New Year’s – a perfect calendar for Gregoire’s hide-and-seek communications style.
