DHS chief Napolitano says border jumping “not a crime”
To date, President Obama’s contribution to reducing unemployment has been his refusal to fire administration officials who dearly deserve a pink slip. As national unemployment numbers continue to decline each month, it is fair to say that the only jobs being “saved or created” are the ones “saved” by guardian angels standing watch over incompetent officials such as Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano.
Coming to us this Tuesday morning by way of Michelle Malkin’s blog is the not-so-shocking revelation that Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s knowledge of the laws her agency is tasked to enforce is sorely lacking.
Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union” program of Sunday, April 19, Napolitano was asked by host John King to comment on the fracas between congressional Democrats and Sherriff Joe Arpaio on how border crossings are should be handled in the state of Arizona, specifically Maricopa County sitting on the Mexican-U.S. border.
KING: A lot of Democrats in Congress want to you investigate [Joe Arpaio]. They think he is over the line. He says he is just enforcing the law and the problem is the federal government.
NAPOLITANO: Well, you know, Sheriff Joe, he is being very political in that statement, because he knows that there aren’t enough law enforcement officers, courtrooms or jail cells in the world to do what he is saying.
What we have to do is target the real evil-doers in this business, the employers who consistently hire illegal labor, the human traffickers who are exploiting human misery.
And yes, when we find illegal workers, yes, appropriate action, some of which is criminal, most of that is civil, because crossing the border is not a crime per se. It is civil. But anyway, going after those as well.
Here is the CNN transcript of the program.
Napolitano’s statement of apparent ineptitude comes on the heels of the release of the chilling and broadly applicable DHS assessment of right-wing extremism – a report that appeared to set in motion the mindless wheels of bureaucracy for the purpose of criminalizing dissent, and a string of intercessions by Napolitano to halt or interfere with raids by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials intended to catch companies hiring illegal aliens. The most notable incident of her helicopter management style occurred less than a month into the Obama presidency, when Napolitano ordered a review of a routine raid conducted on a manufacturing plant in Bellingham, WA. The raid resulted in arrests of 28 illegal immigrants who are alleged to have used false documents to obtain employment.
Will Napolitano be the first Obama appointee to get the axe? This web site wants to push the issue and is asking people to contact their elected representatives. I would say it’s high time to hit the phones.
