GIVE/SERVE Act’s push toward mandatory civil service lives in H.R. 1444
When I was in high school, I can clearly remember my friends describing to me a scene from a movie called “Re-animator”. Never a fan of the horror genre myself, I never saw it and perhaps that is why it lives so indelibly in my memory, in that way that a section of a very good novel can be with a person to their deathbed.
The “Re-animator” storyline centers around a modern-day Dr. Frankenstein who re-animates dead things – people, animals, whatever – using a mysterious green goo. The scene that made such a remarkable impression on our hormonally active cadre of seventeen year-olds was the final scene involving a severed head which was desperately interested (and very nearly successful) in stealing the virtue of the damsel in distress, if you catch my meaning.
This is the nightmarish reference that leaped to mind as I perused the text of H.R. 1444 also known as the ‘Congressional Commission on Civic Service Act’. The “Re-animator” scene rushed into my consciousness because it was just another latent memory about an approaching attacker being decapitated, only to have the head resurface to attack with even greater ferocity. H.R. 1444 is a stand-alone piece of legislation that contains the portions of the GIVE/SERVE legislation that would have instituted a congressional committee to investigate possible ways to implement mandatory public service for all Americans. Those portions had been removed from both the House and Senate versions of GIVE/SERVE, and some had speculated that they might reinserted in the joint conference committee.
The time to put pressure on your Senators to kill this bill is now. Stop H.R. 1444 before it runs up the Statue of Liberty’s skirt and threatens her virtue.
